BACKGROUND & CONTEXT
Video by ©Camille Woodthorpe
First Mode is a decarbonization company focusing on aiding the Mining Industry to cut down fossil fuel use. The company is proposing a HEV Trial Development Program on customer site that converts existing diesel haul trucks to utilize hybrid diesel-electric power instead. The resulting truck becomes a Hybrid Electric Vehicle, often referred to as HEV.
Given this will be the first time the mine is co-developing with a product company like First Mode on a Beta Product Trial Program, we will need a tool to help us monitor its Performance & improve the Product itself.
Help define what are the detailed breakdown of the functionality of the HEV Analytics tool for Site GM. These include:
Primary hierarchy of metrics
Relatable information and units relating to Site GM’s existing tools
Continue to build the trust & relationship with User Subject.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
CHALLENGES & CONCERNS
1. WHAT ARE THE USE CASE SCENARIOS?
We need to find out as much about the day-to-day job responsibility and how it relates to our HEV Trial. The key will be how to engage with the GM with their availability being so limited.
With the previously established rapport, we should be able to obtain more interview time this round. That said, we can still utilize collateral that help organize our effort while making efficient use of the interview time.
APPROACH & TOOLS
-
With the previously established rapport, we should be able to gain more time this round.
While we need to obtain critical information, it is still important to leave time for User Subject input.
-
Visually mockup dialog topics to facilitate quicker understanding.
Elements can be moved digitally to represent User's priority of features. Exercise is similar to Card Sorting.
-
Visually outline the activities the User goes through.
Representation of Day | Week | Month in the life of User is like.
Provides conversation background to overlay various Hypothetical Solutions & simulate its effectiveness.
The top 3 metrics that Mine GM care about are:
Diesel Savings
Energy Regenerated
Operation Uptime
With the GM’s current report, all units are related to Liters of Diesel.
GM report is on a quarterly basis.
Performance Analytics of the Truck Operation and Driver will directly feed into HEV Analytics for the GM.
FINDINGS & ANALYSIS
Looking back at our Round 1 findings, it is unlikely our truck will be fully optimized to hit Target Bench mark of 15% savings during the Trial’s first quarter.
If that’s the case, perhaps we need to look into other positive feedback metrics:
One of which can be tracking the rate of improvement. This should reassure Mine GM that we’re on the right path towards optimized performance.
In order to deliver the HEV analytics needed for Site GM, the work with Trial Manager and Driver needs to happen concurrently
Preliminary Draft Roadmap of the interdependency of various analytics tools show below:
IMPACT
CUSTOMER
Feels appreciative that the is extensive effort to make the analytical tool similar to existing tool and familiar to use
RESEARCH
Strengthening the personal relationship with GM will gain us access to other key site stakeholders, which is integral to research & de-risk any potential issues that may arise for the Trial Program.
PRODUCT MANAGENT
Road-mapping the relationships between key Users & the respective products is critical for internal & external communication. Having collateral that explain the scope goes a long way in quickly catching various stakeholder to the issues at hand. This is especially important given that people have limit availability.
Upon digging deeper into what the Mine GM cares about vs what will likely happen during real world trial conditions, we found out that the original goal achieving 15% in the first quarter may be unattainable. While not the original ideal, it is better to be honest with the client on reassessing expectations rather than continuing eventual letdown with unattainable goals. After all, these early clients are really our Development Partners that are willing to bear the travails of Product Development along with us.
